Who Cares? I Kinda do....
So you think America has a large gap to fill to be competitive with the rest of the world in the sport of soccer? Well I’ll give you another sport where we have a gap to fill. A sport that is more fun to watch for the most part, and a sport that a lot more Americans seem to care about. That sport is tennis. I enjoy watching tennis, I enjoy playing tennis, and for the most part, I find it exciting to watch a really competitive match between two good pros. However, the American tennis program took another huge hit to the gut last night with Roger Federer's complete beat down of American Andy Roddick. This guy is our big hope of beating these other powerhouse players in this sport, and he just can't do it. That is like the United States playing Brazil or Italy in the finals of the world cup. At least the U.S. put up a fight against international soccer powerhouses, right? Roddick can’t seem to get over the hump against guys like Federer and Nadal. And America’s second best player, James Blake, had another poor showing at a major. It’s not just soccer and basketball where America is falling behind, it’s a simple sport like tennis where America is constantly long shots to win these major titles. I think we should just make all our best athletes play football, and forget about other sports. Where has the pride of American athletics gone. This is just another example of the pathetic state of this country’s sports.
I have to say, I'm not that concerned. An individual sport like tennis isn't that important with regards to the state of American sports. Tennis is a relic. It's a sport a lot of rich people used to, and still do, play. It's not that accessible to the masses. Frankly, I find it second only to golf in absolute arrogance. What kind of spectator sport doesn't let the fans scream like maniacs when the game is going on?
