Egg Bagels
Whatever happened to egg bagels? I used to eat them as a kid. They were my favorite type of bagel. Now I can never find them in supermarkets, grocery stores or chain bagel shops in my area of Brookline. That includes Stop 'N Shop, Trader Joe's, Bruegger's and Finagle A Bagel just within several blocks of my place. What's the deal? Is it a health thing? Did the Anti-Carb Police get them? The Trans Fats Gestapo? Are they not Kosher or something?

HaHa, Trans Fats Gestapo, thats rich...I actually had an Egg Bagel last night around 12 or so...they are not hard to be found in the Ardmore region....

Oh, I love egg bagels too. Our grandfather used to make them for us toasted with butter and cream cheese. If you've never had a bagel toasted with both butter and cream cheese you're missing out on something mind-blowingly delicious, though the Trans-Fat Gestapo may take you away for that one.

Maybe one of the reasons why you can't find them is that you're going to chain bagel places. There has got to be a real (read: Jewish), independent bagel store somewhere in Brookline. You might also try a deli.

Now I really want an egg bagel with butter and cream cheese. Thanks, Jeff. I had no reason to go outside today till now.

Now that you mention it, I haven't seen egg bagels in a long time either. I never liked them much, though, so I haven't though about it.

I can deal with butter and cream cheese, but one of my old babysitters used to do butter and peanut butter. I don't even remember if I ever tried it, but just the sound of it is so gross to me...

Maybe one of the reasons why you can't find them is that you're going to chain bagel places.

See, the thing is, I could get egg bagels in Boonville, New York in the 90s where there existed one half-Jewish family in 100 square miles. All we had was a supermarket and a bunch of convenience stores, yet I could get them there. What is it about where I live that stops them from showing up in these same type of stores when a) you can get any other type of bagel and b) you can get egg bagels in Boonville, NYC, Philly and Jersey? Adding to the mystery is the fact that in Brookline I usually see more temples than churches during my day.

Liz, butter and peanut butter is a solid combination. Then again, I sometimes eat sunny side up eggs and a bagel with cream cheese and dip the bagel in the egg yoke.

To the rest of you, quit taunting me!

Kupel's?

As Adam notes, Kupel's does in fact carry egg bagels.

Thanks, guys. I will have to check out Kupel's when my egg bagel urges become uncontrollable. I knew there were "real" bagel shops down on Harvard that I could check out but I'm still perplexed as to why the egg bagel has lost it's mainstream availability.

They have Lender's egg bagels at Stop and Shop. They're not good, but they're egg bagels. We have had them in our home, love.

Kupel's is a fine place, but I also suggest checking out Bagel Rising on the corner of Harvard and Commonwealth Ave. right next to Marty's Liquors. Thier egg bagels are superior to anything I have found here yet, not to mention their cream cheeses and bagel sandwiches.
